Board of Directors
The Rising Suns Non-Profit Pharmacy Board of Directors includes several diverse memebers of the Southeast Ohio community, who provide their time, talent, and treasure to help assist the needs of the Pharmacy to help it fulfill its mission.

Sarah E. Adkins, PharmD, RPh, BCACP (Interium Executive Director)
Sarah Adkins, currently the interium executive director and ex-officio member of the board directors of Rising Suns Pharmacy. Dr. Adkins is a pharmacist and a native of Athens County, Ohio. Sarah attended Albany Elementary through the 8th grade. She moved with her family into the city of Athens and graduated from Athens High School in 1993. She graduated from the University of Toledo in 1998 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Pharmacy. She worked for Meijer Pharmacy in Northwest Ohio for two years after graduation. She then moved to Columbus, Ohio and worked for Medco Health Solutions as a Customer Service Pharmacist, Managed Care Pharmacist, Supervisor of Physician Service Center and then Knowledge Manager of Medication Therapy Management. She attended The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy (OSU COP) and completed her Doctor of Pharmacy in June of 2010. Sarah moved back to her hometown of Athens, Ohio in 2011. She completed a PGY 1 residency in a collaborative agreement of clinical and academic practice with OSU COP and Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUHCOM). After the residency, Dr. Adkins advanced her residency into a full time shared position with OSU COP and OUHCOM where she has worked for the past eight years. She precepts fourth year Ohio State pharmacy students on rotations. She spends clinic time with the Ohio University Heritage Community Clinic and a family residency practice. She teaches pharmacy sciences at OUHCOM and Ohio University College of Health Sciences and Professions (CHSP). She also teaches Introduction to Pharmacy in the Department of Chemistry also at Ohio University. She is passionate and dedicated to her communities in Appalachia, Ohio, Southeast Ohio, and Athens.
Marc D. Richards, DO, MBA (President)
Double-Board Certified Family Medicine Physician by ABFM and AOBFP, Dr. Richards, D.O., M.B.A. has been a charter board member, serving since 2019 for Rising Suns Non-Profit Pharmacy. He is an actively practicing Family Medicine physician in Ohio. 
Mark McMills, PhD (Vice-President)
Dr. Mark McMills is a PhD in Chemistry and faculty at Ohio University in the Department of Chemistry. Dr. McMills is a successful professor and researcher with many publications. He is a course instructor for Organic Chemistry for undergraduate students. He and his wife are both advocates for the promotion of the profession of pharmacy at Ohio University and in Southeast, Ohio. They are faculty advisors and instructors with the Bachelors in Chemistry Pre - Pharmacy degree at Ohio University. They have been involved in the promotion of pharmacy at OU and in Athens for almost 20 years. Mark served on the board of the Dance Factory Studios. He has a daughter who graduated from Athens High School and now resides in California. Mark has been with Ohio University and has lived in Athens for almost 30 years.

Patrick (Sean) Kiser (Treasurer)
Patrick (Sean) Kiser, graduated from Ohio University in 2005 with a bachelor degree from the College of Arts and Sciences, with an emphasis in English as well as a double minor in Philosophy and Political Science. Sean married in 2007 to his wife, both reside in Athens, Ohio with their two sons. In 2009, Mr. Kiser opened Kiser’s Barbeque, a local BBQ restaurant on E. State St. Mr. Kiser currently sits as President of the Board for the Athens City-County Visitors Bureau.

Bela Bhatt-Koshal, DO (Secretary)
Bela Bhatt-Koshal completed medical school in 1998 at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens Ohio. After both she and her husband had completed their medical training, Dr. Bhatt-Koshal moved back to Athens with her family in 2009. Since this time, she has held various roles in training medical students and residents in the Southeast Ohio region including Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at Ohio University and past Associate Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency at Ohio Health O’Bleness Hospital. She has had the opportunity to provide care in a variety of settings throughout her career including acute care, college health, traditional family medicine as well as integrative and lifestyle medicine. As a previous Board member of Live Healthy Appalachia, she has been active in increasing awareness of the prevention of chronic disease throughout the Southeast Ohio community. She is currently, along with her husband, co-chair of the board for the Friends Of India, an Ohio University Foundation Endowment which seeks to promote friendship and an exchange of culture between the people of Southeast Ohio and those of Asian Indian descent. In her downtime, Bela enjoys cooking dishes from around the globe and spending quality time with her husband, three children and sweet labrador retriever.

Elizabeth (Liz) Beverly, PhD (Grants)
Elizabeth A. Beverly, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and the recipient of the Heritage Faculty Endowed Fellowship in Behavioral Diabetes, Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Ralph S. Licklider, D.O., Research Endowment. Dr. Beverly graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Biology and Behavioral Health and a minor in Gerontology in 2008. She completed a five-year postdoctoral fellowship in diabetes at Harvard Medical School with the Joslin Diabetes Center in 2013. Dr. Beverly conducts research focused on chronic disease management, with a specific emphasis on type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Her research program examines diabetes through a psychosocial lens, employing mixed methodology to examine complex challenges in a rural and underserved region in Appalachian Ohio. She is focused on implementing evidence-based interventions, including patient navigation, community health workers, and peer support networks, to address health disparities to improve clinical outcomes. In addition, she has employed focused ethnographic methods to better understand the culture of rural Appalachian Ohio and how this culture influences diabetes self-care. Currently, she is collaborating with the OHIO Game Research and Immersive Design (GRID) Lab to educate healthcare providers about cultural self-efficacy and social determinants of health using virtual reality simulations.

Tobie Newberry, DNP
Tobie Newberry is a Certified Nurse Practitioner with her Doctorate in Nursing Practice. She is currently working at the Heritage Community Clinic, in Athens Ohio. It gives her much joy to work with the underserved population. She continues to collaborate with local pharmacies and providers to provide the best care for her patients. She started her nursing career in 1994 as a Licensed Practical Nurse and continued her education while working full time in local hospitals, a primary care office and with Neurosurgeons throughout her career. She is not limited to her full time job. Dr. Newberry also works with the geriatric population at a local nursing home, and is adjunct faculty with the School of Nursing at Ohio University.

Ben Holter, PharmD, RPh
Dr. Ben Alan Holter is a Co-Owner of Shrivers Pharmacy and Wellness in Athens and Shrivers Pharmacy in Nelsonville, Ohio. Dr. Holter has 12 years of retail management experience in Southeastern Ohio, including 2 successful pharmacy start-ups. He is a 2008 graduate of Ohio Northern University’s Raabe College of Pharmacy (Doctor of Pharmacy) and a 2013 graduate of Ohio University’s College of Business (Masters of Business Administration). Dr. Holter currently serves on the Board for Live Healthy Appalachia and previously served 4 years on the Board of Trustees for the Ohio Pharmacists Association. Dr. Holter resides in Athens with his wife Mateja and children, Mason and Sienna.

Ken Ryan, JD, M.Musc.Ed
Ken is a local attorney and owner of Ryan Law Office Co. LPA in Athens. He lives in Coolville with his wife and son. Ken’s practice focuses primarily on probate and juvenile matters. Ken has a long history of representing children, impaired adults, their caregivers, and individuals suffering from mental illness. Prior to attending law school, Ken had a 12-year teaching career at Trimble Local Schools beginning in 1992. Ken has been involved in many civic and governmental organizations, including The Athens Foundation, Coolville Village Council, Athens County Board of Elections, Athens Professionals for Philanthropy, The Athens County Bar Association, The Ohio Bar Association, The Ohio Association of Election Officials, Leadership Athens, the Southeast Ohio Citizens Review Panel for child welfare, OU Communiversity Summer Band, and the 2014 Athens County Red Cross Dancing with the Stars Event. Ken is one of 6 sons born and raised in Knox County, Ohio and came to Athens from Grove City in Western Pennsylvania. He received his undergraduate education at Ohio Wesleyan University, his master’s degree from Ohio University, and his juris doctor from the University of Dayton.

Important News
The Board of Directors held the annual meeting for the organization. The next annual meeting is scheduled for May 21, 2022.
The Board of Directors approved the use of the accounting software necessary to power the Pharmacy.
The next Board Meeting is scheduled for May 1, 2020.

Typically, the Board meets every two weeks and on an ad-hoc basis.
The Pharmacy has secured a new site for operations in Athens, Ohio.
